December 9th is a national Holiday in Peru in honor of the Battle of Ayacucho. Instead of having a mattress sale, Peruvians celebrate their war heroes with parades, reminiscent of the parade scene in Godfather II where young Don Corleone had Don Fanucci killed. If you ask me, some of the fellas look like they’d rather be on the couch watching TV.

There was no killing at this parade, just lots of incense burning, trombones tromboning, and men willing to throw out their backs to lift the flowered float.

…or maybe it is a mattress.

A national holiday in Peru means everyone gets today off, which for teachers is celebrated by catching up on grading papers.

This parade was on the border between the districts of Barranco and Surco, Lima.
